Train Business Users to Build Workflows with a Combination of InfoPath and SharePoint Designer 2010

Business users looking for simple methods to build processes to deliver targeted data should be trained to use SharePoint Designer 2010 and InfoPath 2010 to build workflows. Of course these users should have the technical understanding required to safely use these tools.

In a video tutorial titled Create a Site Workflow and Modify its Form Using InfoPath, Asif Rehmani, SharePoint® MVP and MCT demonstrates how to build a simple site workflow. The purpose of the workflow should be very pertinent to business users looking for reasons to hasten adoption of computing over SharePoint 2010.

The reason for the workflow in this tutorial is to survey SharePoint users. Surveys are certainly a popular tool for business users, especially when cross departmental collaboration is required. So enterprise IT organizations can include this video in a presentation to business users on why adopting SharePoint 2010 makes sense.

In less than 20 mins. we demonstrate in this video how to use a combination of SharePoint Designer 2010 and InfoPath 2010 to build a flexible workflow. We show how to

  • collect the results of the workflow in a SharePoint List
  • include columns in the SharePoint List for each of the important pieces of information to be collected by the workflow and its form
  • add custom branding to the workflow form
  • and notify stakeholders of the results of the survey by email

The simplicity of this workflow, which can be built with comparative ease by business users with relatively little additional training in SharePoint, will likely attract a lot of user interest, especially when SharePoint 2010 is compared to other platforms. The complex set of steps required to deliver the same capability should be rather obvious.

Enterprise IT organizations interested in learning more about this video tutorial, and how to include it (along with other videos available from our website) in a presentation to business users, can contact us. We can demonstrate how to build a compelling presentation to business users on a SharePoint adoption topic.
