Connecting the SharePoint 2013 User Profiles Service to Active Directory for a Domain

Once the SharePoint 2013 User Profile Service is connected to Active Directory for a network domain, then all of the users registered to Active Directory, complete with their profiles, can be immediately added to the SharePoint 2013 User Profile service.

In a video titled, Import users into SharePoint User Profile data from Active Directory, Asif Rehmani, SharePoint MVP and MCT notes that “the SharePoint 2013 User Profile service can be connected to the domain Active Directory so that it can import all of the domain users and their profiles, from there.” The intended audience for this video tutorial are SharePoint Administrators.

For administrators who wish to take advantage of this opportunity, the connection process starts with a visit to SharePoint 2013 Central Administration. From there, select “Manage Service Applications.” You will either need to create the User Profile Service, or select it. Once the service is selected, then click on “Configure Synchronization Settings”. Select “Use SharePoint Active Directory Import” as the synchronization option. Once this selection has been made, return to the previous screen. This time select “Configure Synchronization Connections”. Create a new connection, which will be the specific connection to Active Directory for the network domain that you need. Assign a name to the connection and set the connection type to “Active Directory Import.” Next, set the fully qualified domain name for the connection. It’s helpful to have administrator login credentials for the domain handy, as you will need to enter this login for “Account Name.” Once you have entered the “Account Name” information, then look for the “Populate Containers” button. Click this button. The application goes out and collects all of the information you will require to enter all of the users from Active Directory for the domain into the SharePoint 2013 User Profile service.

When each of the above steps has been successfully completed, return to the prior screen and click the button to “Start Profile Synchronization.” Be sure to click the check box to enable the “full” option, so that the service will synchronize all of the information between the two data sources.
